Why use cloth pads? There are three main reasons to use cloth menstrual pads: comfort, cost, and environmental impact.
Comfort: cloth pads are much more comfortable than disposable pads. They are soft, absorbent, and breathable. Cloth pads have no sticky backing to pull your hairs or skin, and no rough paper to rub against sensitive parts. Many women who dislike disposable pads find cloth pads to be very comfortable, even cozy.
Cost: using cloth pads saves you money. Unlike disposables, which must be purchased over and over, cloth pads are purchased once and last for years. A set of Moonlady Pads “pays for itself” within a few months of use.
Environment: The average woman throws away more than 10,000 tampons or disposable pads in her lifetime. These pads are produced using trees and petroleum products, and end up in landfills, sewers, or bodies of water.
Are Moonlady Pads sanitary? Yes. Properly cared for, Moonlady Pads are sanitary and safe for use. You wear and wash your underpants and don’t worry at all, and you can do the same with Moonlady Pads.
How do I use a Moonlady Pad? All Moonlady Pads are made with wings and snaps. Position the pad in the crotch of your underpants, as you would a disposable pad, and wrap the wings around the crotch. Fasten the snaps, and you’re done. The fleece backing keeps the pad from sliding around. When you remove the pad, you can fold it up discreetly: hold the pad flat, and fold one end inward over the flannel surface. Then fold the other end inward: the pad should be folded in thirds with the wings sticking out. Bring the wings together on top of the bundle and fasten the snaps. This keeps the pad together with the used side in.

How do I choose the right sized pad? The size of pad you need depends on your flow and lifestyle. Most women like to keep an assortment of pads on hand, as flow varies throughout a woman’s period. For example, a woman might keep three or four Maxi Pads on hand for her heaviest days, a few Overnight Pads for nighttime use, some Mini Pads for lighter flow days, and Panty Liners for light spotting or discharge. If you have a heavy flow, you may use Maxi Pads almost exclusively, while someone with a light flow could use Mini Pads and Panty Liners. We offer a wide assortment of pads, so there’s sure to be a pad (or several!) right for you.
What’s the difference between a Maxi Pad and a Mini Pad? Moonlady Maxi Pads are designed for medium to heavy flow, while Mini Pads are designed for light to medium flow. Maxi Pads are made with a layer of double-thick cotton terry, two layers of cotton double flannel, and a hidden layer of PUL for leak protection. Mini Pads are made with three layers of cotton double flannel, with no terry and no PUL. Both Maxi Pads and Mini pads are backed with poly fleece, and they come in the same sizes, Short and Long.
How often do I need to change my pad? How often you need to change your pad depends on your individual flow and the size of the pad. We recommend owning several sizes and absorbencies of pad, as your flow will vary day by day. A good rule of thumb is that you will need to change your pad about as often as you change disposable pads, but some women find that Moonlady Pads are much more absorbent than a disposable pad. Use your best judgment: if you feel like you should change it, go ahead. Since you aren’t throwing it away, changing your pad will do no harm.
Are Moonlady Pads leak-proof? Moonlady Pads have leak-resistant layers. Maxi pads have layers of polyurethane laminate (unless you request that we leave it out) along with a layer of poly-fleece; mini-pads have a layer of poly-fleece. Like any pad, a Moonlady Pad can leak if left too long without changing, but we find that they absorb quite a lot and are very unlikely to leak.
Do Moonlady Pads smell? Properly cared for, Moonlady Pads have no offensive odor. As long as you change your pads when necessary, and care for them correctly, they will not smell at all.
